Section 3: Supplemental (Non-Vacancy Specific) Recruitment Activities Undertaken by WYDC-TV.
). WYDC participated in the regional Career Development Council Job Partnership Program. Providing a real-world opportunity for high school students to spend extended time working in a career of their choice. Program includes shadow-days, where a student can follow an employee throughout his day to see what really happens at work. Jennifer Mattison, coordinator.
). WYDC president (Bill Christian) participated in NY State Broadcaster’s Association virtual Broadcasting Career Fair on-line. The Career Fair was put together by the New York State Broadcasters’ Association and promoted by TV and radio stations throughout the state. Over 700 prospective applicants attended. Both resumes and applications were accepted. Information regarding jobs and careers in television and at WYDC was dispersed orally and in written form to interested applicants. Resumes were collected and are on file at the WYDC studio, 33 East Market St. Corning, NY 14830.
). Established internship and co-op program. Ongoing. Jennifer Mattison, On-Site Coordinator. WYDC has always been committed to the education of youth interested in the broadcasting field by way of internship programs that are designed to meet their individual needs. This program has included students from a diverse age range and educational background. These students have come from area high schools such as Corning East, Corning West, and Addison High School. As well, students have also been recruited from area colleges such as: Corning Community College, Binghamton Universityh, Mansfield University and Alfred University. Participating students have learned broadcasting-related skills under the close supervision of all station employees. Areas of study that have been explored are: commercial production, website editing , public service coordination, traffic assistance, master control and various other aspects of videography and editing. Length of participation has also varied depending on individual needs, and has ranged from one-day shadowing experiences all the way to year-long internships. All internships have been on a volunteer basis, with ejmployee/instructor evaluation and feedback given for the student to earn academic credit.
). Co-operative Job training program through BOCES. Jennifer Mattison, coordinator. WYDC successfully participated in a year-long work/study program to train students for careers in broadcasting. The unique partnership with this regional trade school allowed for students to get real life training, while getting paid by the television station and receiving high school or college credit. The school partially reimbursed the television station for this part time position. Because the program lasted longer than a typical internship, the students receive in-depth training and ultimately perform the task of a true employee. Students that have completed this program previously were hired outright by the TV station for part time and eventually full time employment. Areas of training include master control, traffic, production and accounting.
